YOUTH CONTINUUM
This is a set of rules specially designed to gradually introduce the skills needed to participate in the full 15 a side game at under 13. At under 7 and under 8 tag rugby is played – i.e. without the physical contact of tackling and scrums which are gradually introduced as players mature. The continuum was introduced for two main reasons. Firstly for safety, physical contact is gradually introduced as young bones and muscles become stronger. Secondly it is to ensure a strong grounding in handling the ball, which is key to all that is exciting in the game. Scrums, lineouts and kicking can be coached later.
